웅얼거리는 마음을 담아
지난 여름날을 떠올리며 김옥정 작가가 그린 이번 전시는 어딘가 모르게 묵직함이 스며들어 있다. 비구름이 내려앉은 축축한 공기와 검회색의 빗방울. 그가 우리에게 보여주는 날씨는 그리 화창하지 않다. 그러나 그림 속 쏟아지는 비는 어두운 색과 다르게 경쾌한 모양새를 보이고, 단계적으로 밝아지거나 빗물을 닦아주는 구름의 등장은 유쾌하기까지 하다. 이외에도 작고 연약해 보이는 지붕과 나무는 든든한 보호막이 되어준다. 여기서 작가는 우산 하나를 관객에게 쥐여준다. 밝은색으로 덮인 우산은 우리를 비 아래에서 따듯하게 보호해줄 것만 같다.
그의 작업은 마치 돋보기로 자신의 마음을 들여다보듯 자신과 주변의 사소한 일상을 하나씩 되돌아보는 것에서부터 시작된다. 스쳐 지나간 말과 관계 속에서 덩어리진 마음을 발견하고, 붓을 들어 얇 고 가는 색의 선을 올린다. 내뱉지 못해 남아있던 생각과 감정은 손끝의 따스함으로 얹어지고 세세한 붓질로 덮인다. 세밀한 선이 겹치면서 차차 만들어지는 형태는 몽글한 생김새를 가진다. 마치 가볍고 따듯해 보이지만, 그 안에 단단한 무게를 지닌다.
이전 작업 ‘모래 덩어리’ 시리즈에서 볼 수 있듯이, 금방 바스러지는 소재인 모래는 축축하게 뭉쳐 견고한 모습을 이룬다. 사라지지 못한 마음의 덩어리는 모래 산의 형상으로 두꺼운 털을 쓰고 스스로 무거운 존재가 되기로 결심한 것처럼 보인다. 이번 전시에서 등장하는 빗방울 또한 작은 물방울들이 단단히 모여 검회색의 묵직한 존재로 나타난다. 여기에는 수많은 감정의 부스러기들이 함께 응결되어 쏟아져 내릴 것이다. 그의 그림은 투명하고도 무거운 마음을 내비치며, ‘나’의 이야기를 ‘당신’의 이야기로 전한다.

이번 전시는 그의 2021년 작업에서 파생되어 과거와 현재를 연결한다. <모두에게 우산을>(2021) 은 전시 제목으로 이어지고, <모든 울림에는 번짐이 있지>(2021)는 대형 작품 <모두에게 우산을>(2022)로 변모한다. 이렇듯 작가는 하나의 이야기를 곱씹어 되풀이하는 방식을 즐긴다. 이러한 창작 방식은 마치 구름이 만들어지는 과정과 비슷해 보인다. 작은 물방울이 모여 구름을 이루고 떨어진 빗방울이 다시 구름이 되는 과정에서, 물은 그 형태를 유연하게 바꾼다. 물의 속성처럼 작업의 소재는 전시로 확 장되고 회화의 부분이 다시 새로운 작품으로 탈바꿈하는 순환 구조를 취한다.

With a mumbling heart
Kim Ok-Jung recalls the last summer painting towards this exhibition, which holds a heavy atmosphere. The damp air and dark grey raindrops from the rain clouds; Kim delineates a rather cloudy weather. However, regardless of the dark colour, the pouring rain in the painting holds a cheerful shape, and the appearance of clouds that gradually brighten or wipe off rainwater is even pleasant. In addition, the small, fragile roofs and trees become secure protection. Here, the artist gives an umbrella to the audience. This bright-coloured umbrella seems to keep us warm and safe under the rain.
Kim's work begins by reflecting on herself and her surrounding daily life one by one as if she looks into her mind with a magnifying glass. She finds her wounded heart in between relationships with fleeting words and raises thin lines with a brush. The thoughts and emotions left unspoken remain on top of the warm fingertips and are covered with delicate brush strokes. The shape of these layered lines appears soft. It looks light and warm but holds a solid weight inside.
As seen in the previous work, "Sand Lump" series, sand is a material that easily crumbles, damply clumps together, and solidifies. The mass of the remaining heart wears thick fur and becomes a heavy being in the shape of a sand mountain. Assembled with tiny droplets, the raindrops in this exhibition also appear dark gray and heavy. A lot of emotional debris coagulate and pour down here. Kim's paintings convey a transparent yet heavy heart, delivering 'my' story as 'your' story.
The artist's personal experience is transmitted into a metaphorical formative language and spread to others. She uses Soonji to express the permeating colour rather than overlay feels. The ink and Bunchae make a flowing mark on the paper, and the pigment becomes opaque as it accumulates. The remaining fragments of emotions, thoughts, and words remain subtly turbid on the surface of the painting. Revealing an attitude of leaving disordered, ambiguous traces and refusing to deliver warm sentiments directly. While the transparent water droplets accumulate to have a dark colour, gray coexists in the floating mind of each painting.
The exhibition is derived from the artist’s 2021 work, connecting the past and the present. <The Giving Umbrella> (2021) leads to the title of the exhibition, and <Every Echo Spread> (2021) transforms into an extensive work < The Giving Umbrella > (2022). Such this, Kim enjoys the way of repeating a story by reflecting on it. This creative method resembles the process of making clouds. Small droplets gather to form a cloud, and when those raindrops fall to become clouds again, water flexibly changes its shape. Like the nature of water, the material of the work expands to construct the exhibition and takes a cycle in which part of the painting transforms into a new work.
